Zen and the curious art of instant soup

Zen Teaching of Instantaneous Awakening | BPG.

What I find to be curious is that the Zen teaching of Instant Realization has been around since the 8th century.  And yet, pretty much every Zen center or blog has its emphasis on sitting and training – virtually for years.  It’s usually framed as an iffy proposition to attain within a single lifetime.

Why is that?

I’d be interested in comments and feedback on the topic.

From what i have read, enlightenment is instant, not gradual. However most of the time it requires preparation and hard work (zazen). Although there have been instances of enlightenment without prior meditation.

The longer the prior work, the longer and deeper the original kensho is (theoretically).
