In Chinese folklore, Chinese Buddhism and Taoism, a hungry ghost is thought to be the spirit of the departed, whose death has been violent, unhappy, or the spirit of one who caused evil deeds in life. They can also emerge from neglect or desertion of ancestors, and have an insatiable hunger for food, drink or possessions. If the hunger is not assuaged, they will attack the living, feeding off of their energy and emotions. It is believed by the Chinese that there are three main groups of hungry ghosts:
